How to Assign Static IP Address in Windows 7

I have read many articles before creating this post, and most of them just say go into the network properties and assign static IP address the the computer. That is not the case at all, if you assign a static IP address to the computer you need to let the router know, if not the router will try to assign an IP address to a computer who has a Static IP address assign already.

We need the computer name

1. Go to Start-> Right click Computer-> Properties you’ll see the computer name under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings.

Now we need to know the current IP address given by the Router’s DHCP.

1. Press the windows key plus R on the keyboard to open the Run window.

2. Here type cmd and click ok, To open the command prompt.

3. In the command prompt type ipconfig command and press enter.

4. You will get the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.

5. I will assign the same IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. Given by the Router as Static.

Tell the router I will be using an static IP in the network.

1. Log into the Router by entering the Gateway IP address in the address bar.

2. Go to DHCP Reservation to reserve an IP address for a computer in the network.

3.  There you will find the Client Name or IP address of the computer you would like to reserve the IP.

4. Check mark to select it and add it to the reserve client, and save Changes. That way that computer is always going to have that IP address because the router is reserving it.

Assign the computer a Static IP Adress

1. Go to Start-> Control Panel-> Network and Sharing Center-> Change Adapter Settings-> Right Click Local Area Connection-> Properties.

2. Select Internet Protocol 4 (TCP/IPv4). and click on Properties.

3. Check Use the following IP address: and enter the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.

4. You can leave DNS Blank
