How to Enable Password Expiration – Windows 10

The password expiration is one of the properties provided by Windows for user accounts. By Default, this property is disabled in Windows 7/8 and Windows 10.

Enabling this property will help individual desktop computer users to keep their system’s password changing and to keep their computer safe and secure with wild password guess.

There are two ways to enable password expiration are as follows

Enable Password Expiration by Local Users and Groups

Tap Win+R keyboard shortcut to open the Run dialog box.

Type lusrmgr.msc in the run box and press Enter or click OK.

A Local and Group Manager will appear on the screen. Click on the Users folder on the left column and then double-click the User for which you want to enable Password Expiration.

A Properties Window for the selected profile will appear on the screen. On the General Tab, look for the password never expires checkbox.

If you want to enable password expiration, then uncheck this check box. The password will expire after 30 days.

Enable Password Expiration with Command Prompt

Login with an administrative account to the machine on which Windows 10 is installed. Right, Click the Start menu and Select Command Prompt (Admin). You will see a command window on the screen.

Type wmic UserAccount where Name=’username’ set PasswordExpires=False, and then press Enter key. Replace username with your username.

When the password of the account for which you had enabled Password Expiration expires, you are unable to log in. You are not locked out of your account, you just need to set a new password by entering the old password and new password.

The windows may notify you that your password will expire in a number of days. You cannot change the number of days after which password gets expired. It is just a Company’s policy via Windows that the password will expire after 30 days.
