How to Export and Import Virtual Machines in Hyper-V

In this article, I will show you how to export and import a virtual machine in Hyper-V. We will see which is the quick way to move is or copy the virtual machine and we will also discuss some of the choices to make when doing an export or import.

First, we will see how we can export the virtual machine so open up the Hyper-v.

We can do the export of a virtual machine that is in either a started or stopped state. Export collects all the required files into one unit including virtual machine configuration files, virtual hard disk files, and any checkpoint files if you have created any.

Right-click on the virtual machine which you want to export and in this case we are exporting “Virtual Machine 1”

It will ask to specify the location where you want to save the export files.

Click on the browse button, select the folder and press “Select Folder”.

It will open up a new window click on Export.

You can see the current status of Export on the home page of Hyper-v.

This is how we can export the virtual machine and now processing ahead to see how to import a virtual machine in Hyper-v.

Open the Hyper-v, click on Actions and select Import Virtual Machine.

It will open a new dialogue box press “Next” in the first window.

Browse to the location where virtual image is imported or present and click “Select Folder”

Press “Next” in the window which is opened.

Select the virtual machine which needs to be imported in this it is “Virtual Machine 1”

We have got several options in “choose import type” so select the desired option and press “Next” in this example we will use “copy the virtual machine”.

In the next window it will ask for the location where to import the virtual machine so enter the location in all and press “Next”

In choose folders to store the virtual hard disks browse to the location where we selected the virtual machine import.

Click on “Finish” it will copy the files and the virtual machine is successfully imported.
