Hot to Install the DNS Server Role on Windows Server 2012

DNS (Domain Name System) protocol is regarded as the base of useable internet experience. The installation of a DNS server role in Windows Server 2012 takes a few steps as mentioned below and the process is similar to that of Windows Server 2008R2.

Install the DNS Server Role:

First of all, you have to start the Add Roles wizard in order to add the DNS Server role. Log on to the Windows server 2012 R2 with your credentials and go to the quick start menu from Dashboard.

There is another way to start the Add Roles Wizard which is under specific server being managed. For this purpose, select the Local Server option present in the left pane.

After selecting a local server, a properties window will show up. Scroll the window to find Roles and Features box. Click on Tasks and click on Add Roles and Features for starting the installation of a server role.

It doesn’t depend on what path you choose, this is the resulting window which will be displayed. Skim through the text and click “Next”.

You will have to specify installation type in next window. Select ‘Role-based or feature-based installation’ and click “Next”.

The next window will ask you the address of the destination where DNS server role will be added. Select the destination’s server and click “Next”.

In the next window, you have to select the DNS Server role

After selecting DNS Server role, you will be asked if DNS management tools should be installed on the same server. Here, they are being installed on the same server.

In the next window, you can select any additional features if you want to install. After selecting click “Next”.

The next window will be the confirmation of installation sections. See the window and select “Install”

Now, installation begins and once it completes, click Close. With successful installation, left pane will have the DNS option now. In order to manage the DNS, you can select it from that left pane.

In next window, you will see DNS server available to you for management.

Right click on the server and select DNS Manager.

This launches DNS Manager.
