In this article, we will learn how to install network policy server in windows server. I will use windows server 2012 R2 as an example but the procedure can be applied to other windows server, Like Windows Server 2016.

NPS allows to create and implement network related policies of organization for client computers and if you are working as a network engineer or network administrator you can establish network policies through NAP (Network Access Protection).

Network policies include software and system update or system health and all these policies can be enforced over the whole network.

Install Network Policy Server

Now begin with the installation of network policy server. Log into the Windows server and open server manager.

Click on “Manage” and select “Add Roles and Features”.

It will bring up with the Add role and feature wizard window.

Click “Next” on before you begin. In the installation type select “Role based or feature based installation” and press “Next”.

It will open up select server window so select the Windows server where you want to configure network policy server as in this case I have got one Windows server named “UsamaServer1” so click on server name and press “Next”.

Scroll down to select “Network Policy and Access Services”

As it will open a new dialogue box.

Click on “Add Features” as it will close the dialogue box and press “Next” on network select console.

In Select feature press the “Next” as there is no need to select any feature.

In network policy and access services click on “Next” as this Windows console is explaining its main features.

In role services window select the first option “Network Policy Service” and press “Next”

In confirmation installation selections press the “Install” button.

Once the installation is started it will take some time to install and you can check the installation status.

After the installation, it will ask to close the “Add roles and feature wizard” so click on Close.

This is how you can install the network policy server in windows server 2012 R2.

I have a bare metal install of Hyper-v server 2012 R2. I added it to my domain and can access it through server manager. I can access everything remotely in that computer too, like remote connection, powershell, and disk management. However when I click “Add Roles and Features” I get this message:

“Either there are no servers in the server manager server pool, or there are no servers that support remote installation or removal of roles. To add supported servers, use the add server command on the Manage menu of the Server Manager console.”

I did add the server though and I can access every other part of it, so that cannot be the problem. And Hyper-V server was built by microsoft and came with Windows Server 2012 cd, so I assume it is supported. What could the problem be?
